Secessionist Wonders of Subotica

Twice a year, on Pentecost and the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (September 8), Doroslo hosts a nationally recognized pilgrimage. Today, it attracts not only visitors from every corner of Vojvodina but also from Hungary. The pilgrimage is especially popular among Hungarians and the Sokac people, but other Catholic communities in the region also take part. Visitors gather for Mass, which is followed by a Eucharistic procession. The pilgrimage coincides with the Bácska Portable Mary Statues Meeting. The Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary becomes a unifying event for the Hungarian community in the region, where spiritual enrichment is accompanied by a sense of belonging.DOROSLO AND THE HOLY WELLDoroslo, located in the western part of Vojvodina, has been inhabited since ancient times. Archaeological finds from the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages have been discovered in the area, and in the Árpád-era, the village’s well was referred to as Bajkút. The medieval writings also mention a miraculous healing spring. According to local legends, the well’s miraculous power is believed to originate from the appearance of the Virgin Mary at the site. In the legend, the Virgin Mary touched the earth with her foot, and a healing spring emerged. After the Battle of Mohács, Doroslo suffered destruction, and the area became depopulated. However, it was repopulated from the mid-18th century, primarily by Catholic Hungarians from Transdanubia and some Swabian families. The first modern healing story involves a man from Gombos who was blind and prayed to the Virgin Mary for healing. In his vision, he was told to wash his eyes in the well, which restored his sight, and he saw the Virgin Mary in the water. Following this miracle, 80 more healings were recorded, and the Holy Well became a popular pilgrimage site. A wooden chapel was built beside the well, later replaced by a stone chapel, along with an outdoor altar and a Stations of the Cross. The well is opened on Easter Monday and closed on September 16, the feast day of the Virgin Mary.Pilgrims will once again gather for the pre-feast evening on September 7. After a penitential liturgy, the evening Mass will be celebrated, followed by the administration of the sacrament of the sick. The event ends with a candlelit procession and the recitation of the rosary. On September 8, the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, the solemn Mass will be celebrated by Msgr. Here, we will learn about the famous battle and the liberation struggles against the Turks. We will continue our visit to the Zombor City Museum, where we can admire the works of 45 Hungarian artists. Our next stop is the Bács Fortress, where, with the help of a short role-playing activity, we will recall the atmosphere of medieval parliaments. The evening ends with a social gathering, followed by a musical and dance event to celebrate our new experiences.Day 2: Zenta – TóthfaluOn this day, we visit the city of Zenta, where we will lay a wreath at the famous battle memorial, then get to know the history of the city and its role as a cultural center. Next, we will visit the Senta Artist Colony, where we will encounter works by local and international artists. Vojvodina has a long tradition of winemaking and many different wineries. The climate and soil are ideal for growing grapes. Wineries in Vojvodina produce a wide variety of wines – from white to red.Vojvodina is known not only for its wines but also for its wine festivals. These festivals and tastings are a great opportunity for visitors to get to know the local wines, learn about the history of the wineries, and discover the art of winemaking. During these events, local wineries offer fresh wines, and visitors can taste wines made from different grape varieties.In addition to festivals, wineries often organize vineyard tours. Visitors can see the vineyards in person and sometimes even take part in grape harvesting or other winemaking activities.

Wine Regions

The newly established Deurić Winery exclusively uses grapes grown in its own vineyards for its excellent-quality wines. The winery is located on the sunny southern slopes of Tarcal Hill, at an elevation of 250 meters above sea level, in the village of Mala Remeta, near the Vrdnik spa. Tarcal Hill has long been known for its excellent conditions and has become an important wine tourism destination in recent years. The Deurić Winery grows its grapes on 14 hectares, and the local natural environment – with linden tree plantations, clean air, springs, lakes, and loess soil – provides the perfect conditions for producing high-quality wines. The winery currently has two wine labels on the market: Talas Beli 2014 (dry white wine) and Talas Crveni 2014 (dry red wine).

The joint venture of Sila Ltd. and AgroDima Ltd. began operations in 2014 with the goal of utilizing a 2.3-hectare arable land next to the chain factory.In the first phase, they established a vineyard, around which the Dimalis Winery was built. Today, it has become a popular community space in Bácskossuthfalva in the form of a wine house on Karcag Street. The winery uses modern technology to produce fresh white and rosé wines made with a reductive process, as well as red wines aged in wooden barrels. The grapes are hand-harvested and processed using state-of-the-art winery equipment before being bottled.

The Brindza Winery, the largest and most modern winery in the area, is renowned for its excellent wines. Established in 2010 at the Brindza family's farm in Topola, the winery offers not only wine tasting experiences but also the opportunity to tour the barrique and inox rooms, as well as the cellar. After a wine tasting, visitors can enjoy a relaxing day or night at the family farm or the nearby Capriolo hunting lodge. The winery features six rooms with a spacious shared living room, dining area, and sauna. The rooms are furnished in a rustic style, combined with modern technological solutions, making them ideal for smaller groups and couples.

Welcome to our winery, born from a passion for grapes and the tradition of winemaking.Klinocki Wine is a family-owned winery established in the summer of 2016 in Bajmok. We produce our wines exclusively from our own harvest. Our vineyards cover approximately 2 hectares, which we planted in 2012. Each vine is carefully tended, and we grow the following grape varieties: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Olaszrizling, and Pinot Grigio. Our vineyards are located in the northern part of Vojvodina, near the Hungarian border. During the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, many such vineyards were found in this region, proving that the soil is particularly favorable for grapevines.Our passion for wine is reflected in every bottle — each step of the winemaking process is carried out with great care to create rich, flavorful, and aromatic wines.We organize wine tastings in our tasting room or on the terrace, accompanied by cold platters and smoked meats.

The Kovačević Winery boasts a winemaking and grape-growing tradition of over 100 years. They cultivate 10 hectares of vineyards on their property and lease an additional 70 hectares on the southern slopes of Tarcal Hill, within the Srem region, in the Tarcal wine district. The new winery, built in 2001, is equipped with modern winemaking facilities, combining advanced technology with traditional winemaking methods. The Kovačević Winery is particularly renowned for its Chardonnay and Aurelius wines, but it is also popular among wine enthusiasts and the most discerning wine connoisseurs for its Rhine Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Tramini, Rosetto, and both red and white Bermet.

The Zvonko Bogdan Winery began its operations in 2008, combining the unique characteristics and traditions of the Palić wine-growing region with French technology. The winery’s goal is to produce high-quality wines that embody the characteristics of the region. The building was constructed in the Art Nouveau style, reflecting the traditional architecture of Palić and Subotica. Its impressive structure highlights the inseparable connection between wine and art, providing a worthy home for its increasingly popular and acclaimed wines. The winery is named after Zvonko Bogdan, a renowned Subotica-born singer of traditional urban songs, whose artistry and name are synonymous with a premium experience—just like the wines from the Zvonko Bogdan Winery.

The Wine Castle is located near Palic and is a winery with vineyards, wine cellars, a restaurant, and accommodation facilities, all surrounded by a vast vineyard. They have been involved in wine tourism for over 10 years and were the first in the region to start this activity, making them unique in Serbia. At the Wine Castle, they have been growing grapes and making wine using traditional methods for many years. In the early 21st century, the winery was equipped with modern machinery, which, together with high-quality grape varieties, ensures excellent wine quality. These wines are geographically protected and have already won numerous prestigious awards. The wines produced here and the unique characteristics of the vineyard attract wine enthusiasts and tourists alike.
