Bač, the namesake settlement of Bácska and Bács County, once played a significant historical role. According to sources, it was inhabited even before the Hungarian conquest and had a key role in solidifying Christianity. Saint Ladislaus established the southern center of the Kalocsa-Bács Archdiocese here. The fortress, built between 1338 and 1342 during the reign of King Charles Robert, served as an important defensive stronghold. Modeled after French knightly castles, it had an octagonal shape, with a residential tower and bastions dominating the surrounding flat landscape. The ruins of this impressive structure can still be seen today.
