Zrenjanin walk

Recommended primarily for history and culture enthusiasts, adults aged 30-65, families, and small groups of friends who enjoy exploring remarkable historical sites, are interested in local culture, and want to spend a relaxed yet informative day.

Program

The tour starts at 9 AM in the city center of Zrenjanin, where, after gathering, we begin with a guided city walk to explore the town’s rich history, including significant historical events and the stories behind local landmarks.

Our first stop is the National Museum of Zrenjanin. Established in 1906 as the museum of Torontal County by a resolution of the Municipal Committee and the Cultural Association of Torontal County, this institution belongs to the category of complex museums, covering the region of Central Banat with its research activities. The museum’s five departments house a collection of 33,000 artifacts, showcasing the multicultural development of the city from the Ottoman period through the Habsburg rule up to modern times. The exhibitions help visitors understand the diverse cultural and historical background of the area, influenced by Hungarian, Serbian, German, and Romanian cultures.

Next, we visit the Main Square, where we admire the stunning Art Nouveau buildings and stop by the Contemporary Gallery. The magnificent structures surrounding the square beautifully represent the architectural richness and diversity of Zrenjanin. We will also visit the Baroque-style building of the The Cathedral of Saint John of Nepomuk on the main square.

At noon, we offer a lunch opportunity at a local restaurant, where travelers can savor the flavors of Banat and Vojvodina cuisine. The gastronomic experience includes a selection of traditional dishes such as fish stew, pljeskavica, and local artisan handcrafted cheeses.

In the afternoon, we visit the City Hall, an Art Nouveau masterpiece with breathtaking halls and decorations that transport visitors back in time. The building, which served as the administrative center of Torontal County since 1779, was expanded between 1885 and 1887 based on designs by renowned Hungarian architects Gyula Pártos and Ödön Lechner, pioneers of Hungarian Art Nouveau. During the renovations, remnants of the old fortress demolished in 1711 were discovered, along with human remains and other artifacts. The roof was adorned with Zsolnay tiles, while the main staircase was decorated with stained-glass windows created by Czech master Eduard Kracman, depicting Wisdom, Justice, and Strength.

Afterward, there will be free time for a casual walk around the Zrenjanin Water Tower, one of the city’s most iconic symbol. To conclude the day, participants can enjoy a coffee break while exploring local handmade products.
